The Upper School Drone Club Uses VR Headsets for a New Drone Flying Experience

By Mr. Matthew Parets, Upper School Teacher

Drone racing is one of the big Esports. First-person drones are used where the flyer has a VR heads-up display showing a live video feed from the drone. This gives the flyer the feel of sitting in the drone while they are flying it.

Competitions consist of three-dimensional obstacle courses where the drones fly at full speed around the racing space, over, under, and through obstacles racing to collect flags and be the first to the finish line. Like other Esports, drone racing hones fine motor skills, improves problem solving, and is a powerful tool for teaching collaboration.

Our drone racing team meets every Thursday at club time. While we are just starting out, our goal is to compete as soon as possible.
