Sixth Graders Debate: Should Recess Be Structured or Unstructured?

Should recess be structured or unstructured? That is the question sixth graders debated while wrapping up Unit 6, The Power of Play. For the last three weeks, they have read articles, watched videos, and analyzed infographics, all about the importance of recess in school.

Students were assigned a side today and worked together with students who had the same claim to develop their reasons supported with evidence. Then they faced off and the debate began.

They came back to their collaborative groups to work on a rebuttal and finished it up with a self-reflection. While we might never have a full agreement on which recess is best, we can all agree that recess is important!
