The youngest of four children raised in a military family on a farm in rural Maryland, my parents sacrificed considerably to send me to an independent school; that experience was transformational for me and my family. More importantly, the experiences I had in an independent school would provide for a lifelong desire to provide the same transformational opportunities to others.
In 1999, I was appointed as the seventh Head of School to lead Montverde Academy in its more than 100-year history. This journey has been filled with changes, from the founding of our Lower and Middle School programs to the explosive growth in enrollment from 103 to 1,350 students. With an investment of more than $60 million, the transformation to our campus and programs has yielded a demanding and challenging academic curriculum that includes more than 30 Advanced Placement® courses, stellar SAT/ACT scores, a 100 percent college matriculation rate to some of the nation’s most competitive colleges and universities, an award-winning fine arts program featuring two conservatory programs, seven different Study Area Concentration (SAC) diploma programs, and state and nationally recognized athletic programs.
The experience here is rooted in the ideals of Knowledge, Character, and Community and our culture is based on one primary objective—to achieve excellence in all that we do. To achieve that standard of success, our students will encounter moments of adversity, perhaps even failure, which is all part of the journey to achieving success. Being willing to take on challenges, developing the skills to meet those challenges, and achieving success is founded on the expectation that in each of our students we will develop a work ethic complemented by character qualities that acknowledge diversity, mutual respect and tolerance, and a commitment to the greater community around them.
We are a family of learners, students, and faculty, working together to accomplish something truly transformational. Our website provides merely a snapshot of who we are. If you are considering a Montverde Academy education, I strongly encourage you to visit our campus to best see, feel and experience the truly special place that the Academy is!
