Paddling Toward a Cleaner Future: Leadership and Service-Learning Students Organize Lake Dora Canal Clean-Up

By Sanvhi Gandhi, Class of 2028

On Saturday, April 27, the Leadership and Service-Learning student Sanvhi Gandhi organized a Lake Clean-Up event at the Lake Dora Canal. With the help of Mr. Werner, the eighth-grade science teacher; his dragon boat partner, Mr. Alan; and Ms. Melissa Benner, the Leadership and Service-Learning teacher, eight students were able to paddle about two miles on the canal.

“The lake clean-up was a really fun and interactive way for my friends and me to pick up trash, spend time together, and to say it in a formal way ‘move a step towards a greener earth,’” said Krisha Patel, grade 8. “The lake clean-up was way more fun than I expected. I was anticipating just going around walking on the edges of a lake and picking up trash, but in reality, we got to go on a dragon boat, with the help of Mr. Werner and Ms. Benner, and paddle our way through a few different canals. Through teamwork, we kept the boat going through the canals and picked up trash as soon as we saw it.”

“I liked it and had so much fun,” said Zihan Li, grade 8. “I hope that we can do it again!”

Throughout the clean-up itself, about a bag of trash was found. This event was a wonderful learning experience for everyone!
