December 9, 2021 (Montverde, FL) – Montverde Academy student-athlete Emily Santos finished 5th place overall in the Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia. She competed in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke and currently holds first place in the nation for the long course.
“The Jr. Pan American Games gathered the top under 22 swimmers from all Americas in Cali, Colombia. I was very pleased to see Emily giving her best representing her home country”, said Guilherme Ferreira, Head Swim Coach at Montverde Academy. “Her family was in the stands watching, which is wonderful as they were not able to attend a meet for a long time due to the pandemic”.
According to Ferreira, Santos swam her personal best times in both 100 and 200 breaststrokes with 1’10″99 and 2’35″61 which are new MVA and Panama national records. “She owned both records before March (200m) and June (100m) 2021. This was the main event for her in the first semester together with the state championship and the FINA World Championship next week in Abu Dhabi”, said Ferreira.
Santos also competed in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, representing her native country of Panama. She finished 35th overall in the Women’s 100-Meter Breaststroke at the Olympic games.
“Her performances were significantly faster than the ones she did last semester to qualify for Tokyo”, stated Ferreira. “The Olympic campaign was a huge learning experience in terms of training and competing and she is surely taking advantage and taking her swimming to a next level”.
In the next semester, Emily’s biggest goals are the FINA LCM World Championship in Fukuoka, Japan. The Academy congratulates her efforts is excited for her to keep succeeding in all she puts her mind to.
