Martin Luther King Day of Service: MVA Students Making an Impact

By Mrs. Margaret Price, Assistant Dean of Students for Multiculturalism, Leadership, and Student Programs

Twenty-seven Montverde Academy Upper and Middle School students volunteered for the U.S. Hunger Project’s MLK National Day of Service. The goal was to pack 1 million meals between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Our team packed 1,488 meals during our shift. Each meal provided six servings so a family of six could enjoy a hot meal together.

Students were asked, “What word describes how you feel about today’s MLK Project?”

“Accomplished. We packed a lot of food for families in need.” – Keira Casey, grade 11

“Humbled. Watching people work together to pack meals shows that people still care for others even though the news outlets say differently. This was a great reminder.” – Adaejah Hodge, grade 12

“Happy. It was good because we helped people in need. I got up early on this holiday and had the opportunity to do community service work with my friends. – Maria Eduarda (Duda) Boscarino Nienkotter, grade 10

“Fun. I liked the music that was playing while we worked. This project was worth getting up early for!” – Jayvian Greene, grade 12

Thanks to the dedicated volunteers for being a crucial part of our Inaugural MLK Day of Service Million Meal Pack. Their hard work contributed to the 1,005,120 meals that were packed for those in the greater Orlando area. We are very proud of our students and staff that joined us.

Ghevin Olmstead, grade 7, attended an MLK celebration and parade with his family at Waterfront Park in Clermont. “I think I honored Dr. King by doing what I think his overall dream was. I enjoyed spending time with my family and helping the community in a public park,” said Ghevin.
