Jacob Williamson '21 Earns Navy ROTC Scholarship

Recent Montverde Academy graduate Jacob Williamson earned a scholarship to join the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) during the Upper School Honors Night on May 13. Jacob is set to attend Auburn University and plans to major in civil engineering.

Jacob’s Naval ROTC scholarship covers the cost of his collegiate education at Auburn up to $200,000. Following the completion of his degree and training program, he will join the United States Navy to serve five years upon graduation to give back to the program.

Nearly 4,000 high school seniors apply for the scholarship each year, and just 30 percent of the applicants receive scholarships. Aside from the initial application, each candidate must complete a fitness test and interview process to qualify.

“Jacob is a very talented young man with a bright future,” said Coach Chris Spaulding, MVA Director of Lacrosse. “He is a great athlete, student, teammate, and most of all human being! He is a natural-born leader and a young man who never backs down from a challenge and loves to push himself to the edge. We are very excited to see what he does down the road, but I know no matter what he does, he will do it well and will make us all proud!”

Jacob will join fellow MVA lacrosse teammates Michael Mattioli ’21 and Caleb Sheyda ’21 in attending college on military scholarships. They are heading to the Merchant Marine Academy and the Naval Academy, respectively.

“This year’s senior class was a special group. They had a tremendous work ethic and had a lot of GRIT! This group loved the grind. Our success as a program was in large part due to the senior leadership we got from this class. It’s not surprising that three of our seniors have made the decision to commit to a future with the military,” said Coach Spaulding.
