Srta. Claudia Salazar’s AP Spanish Language and Culture students delved into the world of Fernando Botero, the renowned Colombian artist celebrated for his unique style, known as Boterismo. Botero’s art, characterized by exaggerated figures, offers a whimsical yet profound perspective on humanity, beauty, and culture.
As part of the class’s exploration of beauty and aesthetics, students studied how art reflects and shapes cultural values. They learned about Botero’s contributions to the art world, including his famed reinterpretation of the Mona Lisa, which resides in the Botero Museum (Museo Botero) in Bogotá, Colombia.
Students participated in an interactive assignment where they created their own replicas of Botero’s paintings. Rafael Hernandez, a local Cuban American artist who visited the class, helped students conceptualize their replicas and offered advice on various painting techniques. Each student selected a piece that resonated with them, researched its background, and prepared an oral presentation.
During their presentations, students explained their choice of artwork and shared insights into its cultural and historical context. The activity underscored the integration of language, art, and culture, fostering a rich educational experience that went beyond traditional classroom learning.
