This summer, rising 9th and 10th graders Corbin and Ethan Huynh delved into various aspects of medicine to deepen their interest in the field. The brothers began by participating in a trauma and surgical skills course where they gained firsthand experience in the fast-paced environment of the emergency room. Throughout the week, they practiced suturing, splint placement, airway management, and learned techniques for intravenous and intraosseous access, as well as imaging interpretation. The highlight for both was the exposure to real-world trauma cases, which provided them with a greater appreciation for the life-saving power of modern medicine.
Following this, Corbin and Ethan traveled to New York City for a two-week intensive course, Bioinformatics of Cancer, at Columbia University. The program focused on using bioinformatics to uncover the genetic foundations of diseases, particularly cancer. High school students from around the globe convened to explore genome navigation, cancer mutations, and gene expression profiling.
In addition to the rigorous academic experience, Ethan and Corbin returned home with new friendships and a deeper understanding of the profound impact a career in medicine can have.
