‘A New Framework for Analyzing a Curve’s Kinks’: Mr. Shea Presents at Florida Gulf Coast University Conference

By Mr. John Shea, Upper School Math Teacher

On February 23-24, I attended a conference of the Florida section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) held at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. At the conference, I gave a 45-minute calculus presentation entitled “A New Framework for Analyzing a Curve’s Kinks,” a kink being a point where a curve makes a sharp turn. I have developed a new method for testing whether a given point is a kink, which is simpler and more intuitive than the traditional method, and plan to submit an article on this topic to a mathematics journal in the next month or so.

At the start of his presentation, I explained how last year I retired from Lake-Sumter State College after 35 years and am now teaching math at Montverde Academy. I told them what a great school MVA is and how excited I am to be teaching here.
