Happy to Have Homecoming Fun

SGA began brainstorming ideas for Homecoming back in October. We knew we still wanted to have a ‘Homecoming’ style event for our peers to come together safely, despite the current circumstance with COVID-19. Our goal as a team is to bring together our school community and we felt that MVA needed this more than ever this year. We settled on having an outdoor event in the center of campus, with several photo stations, some great food from the dining hall and music from the different cultures represented by our students.
From what we’ve heard, everyone really enjoyed the opportunity to dress up and hang out together in a safe environment. Many of the local online and day students were able to attend, and it was so great to see them. “It was the best it could’ve been given our current situation,” said Kendyl Cardwell, a senior. Students enjoyed taking pictures at the different backdrops, listening to music and seeing their friends in a social setting. Here’s a look at photos from the evening. (**Please note – students were required to wear masks at all times; however, they were allowed to take masks off for a few seconds to pose for a limited number of photos.)
While the event was non-traditional, we did enjoy selected a tradition Homecoming Court and crowned a King and Queen. Congratulations to the members of the 2021 Homecoming Court, comprised of freshmen Grace McClain and Javier Sarierra; sophomores Isabelle France and Colby Helms; juniors Ashley Conklin and Josh Howe; and seniors girls Lilly Anderson, Giulliana Perez, Madison McMullen, and Niveya Henley; and senior boys: Gustavo Aviles, Bradley Peterson, Weston Baptiste, and Chadi Mayati. The 2021 King and Queen were Gustavo Aviles and Lilly Anderson – congratulations!
Lilly Anderson, our 2021 Homecoming Queen, described being selected by her peers as Queen was “a childhood dream come true.” “I liked how the photo stations were set up around the loop, and enjoyed the music and a bit of dancing,” said Sebastian Ressler, a junior.
SGA would like to thank Mr. Clapper, our sponsor, for all of his guidance and assistance throughout the entire process. Additionally, we want to express our gratitude to Mr. Weaver, Mrs. Price, Ms. Kanikovsky and the Development Office, Mr. Bernatavitz, Dr. Kesselring, the Executive Team, junior class chaperones, the maintenance team, the dining hall staff, and all of our student volunteers for their time and energy to make the event so successful.
