On her trip to the Amazons in Colombia, Sara Echavarria, a rising 11th grader at MVA, spent a day at the Hospital San Rafael De Leticia where she donated notebooks, pencils, and toys to the children and donated scrub caps to the hospital. She read fairy tale stories to one group of children and taught the alphabet to another group.
During the day, Sara learned about the troubles of many of the patients. Most of them lived in indigenous communities without proper healthcare, so to get to the closest hospital, many of them had to travel by boat or bus for up to three days. These stories inspired Sara to speak to the managers of the hospital and propose a medical mission to Leticia, Amazonas, which she hopes will be possible.
