Donkey, Shrek the MusicalMontverde has a dynamic theatre program that ranges from our youngest students in the lower school to our seniors in the upper school. With two full time theatre teachers serving this community, Montverde is able to produce over 20 main stage comedies, dramas, and musicals each year! All of our performances are in the intimate 450 seat Sandra O. Stephens Auditorium, where there is not a bad seat in the house.

There are theatre classes during the academic day in the lower, middle, and upper schools plus an after school theatre activity for upper school students. Academic classes include Acting, Theatre History, Improv, Main Stage Production, and Children’s Theatre.

The after school plays have included “Little Shop of Horrors”, “Grease”, “A Christmas Carol”, “A Servant of Two Masters”, “Once on this Island”, and “Into the Woods”. Montverde also has a strong commitment to mesh our younger and older actors in joint productions. This has led to all-school productions like “Annie”, “Seussical the Musical”, “Mulan”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “SHREK the Musical”.

Montverde has a popular International Thespian Society chapter that competes in Florida regional and state thespian festivals as well as working with local charities as part of their outreach mission. The Cat in the Hat, SeussicalAnother mission of the theatre department is to expose Montverde students to as many live stage performances in the central Florida community as possible. We have strong relationships with theatres like The Orlando Shakes, The Moonlight Players, Bobb Carr, and Mad Cow, as well as other local high schools. On average, the theatre department makes 25 trips a year into the community to see amateur and professional theatre.

Serious thespians can audition for the Subject Area Concentration Visual and Performing Arts / Theatre Diploma. This “SAC VPA” diploma is awarded to students who complete a rigorous 4 year program that immerses them in the art of theatre. Students take a special curriculum while at MVA and must meet other requirements to enter and graduate from this program. VPA/Theatre is similar to a public school magnet program but includes all the benefits of a private school education.
