District 5A is one of the toughest districts in the state of Florida, with three teams placing top twelve in the state. Historically, MVA volleyball has never made it to the district finals. In 2015, MVA fell to Trinity Prep in the semi-final round, and in 2014 they fell to Bishop Moore. Last night, history was made! MVA volleyball met face-to-face with Windermere Prep (WP) in the district semi-final match.

With their powerful serving from point one, WP jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead against MVA. Montverde fired back with 2 blocks from Beatriz Volponi and a kill from Kaeli Crews. The whole first set was back and forth with kills from WP’s Natalie Work down the line, and a quick middle attack from MVA’s Jessica Hamel. MVA took the first set 25-21.

After the side change, MVA seemed to step it up a gear, jumping out fast on WP. The Eagles had their foot on the gas and weren’t backing down. Mariana Volponi was a setting machine, mixing the sets up and keeping WP on their toes. Between the kills from outside hitter, Jojo Brown, and right side, Alyssa Keller, the MVA offense was hard to stop. MVA took set two 25-15

In the third and final set, WP jumped out ahead of the Eagles once more. Solid serving and kills from outside Natalie Work once again put the Eagles behind and had them scrambling to catch back up. MVA trailed WP for the majority of the first set, until Alyssa Keller stepped back to serve for the the Eagles. Alyssa’s precise serving tied up the game for MVA. The Eagles quickly took the lead, with help from the defense of Savannah Swenson, who refused to let a ball hit the floor. Powerful serving and precise passing brought the Eagles through the third set with a 25-16 final score.

The Eagles will go on to play Lake Highland Prep in the Finals on Thursday, October 20 at 7 p.m. We wish them the best of luck!
