On Saturday, June 18, Montverde Academy staff and alumni headed to the Orlando City game versus San Jose to show their support for #OrlandoUnited and honor the victims lost in this month’s tragic Pulse nightclub shooting. Alumni Haaris Kahn ’13, Rohail Hemani ’12, Samantha Klein ’13, Justin Walls ’09, Chris Mitchell ’02, Jesse Meadow ’04, Luke Kaifler-Wright ’05, Tyler Davis ’04, Jordan Foley ’07, Bridgette Valley ’09 and Benjamin Gbauer ’12 were all in attendance for the game.
Throughout the night, the Orlando City Football Club showed their support through numerous tributes to the victims, including the wearing of special #OrlandoUnited t-shirts by the players during warmup, special rainbow corner flags on the field, and a moment of silence during the 49th minute of play for the 49 people lost.
Coming together with the Montverde family to support our greater Orlando community meant so much to both the alumni and staff who attended the game. Tyler Davis, Associate Director of Development for Alumni Relations, explained the significance of that particular game to the alumni family. “We had originally decided to attend that particular game to support a Montverde alumni who is playing for San Jose,” he said. “It turns out that he was on loan to another soccer club, and with the events that occurred just a few days prior the game took on a whole new meaning. White it was a small gathering of alumni, there was a noticeable impact to us all from the shooting. I think we all walked away from the game feeling not only a part of the Montverde family, but the greater Orlando family as well.”
The entire Montverde Academy community wishes to extend our thoughts and prayers to the victims and families, friends, and loved ones effected by this tragedy. We are #OrlandoStrong!
