The 2016 The Montverde Academy Lady Eagles Varsity Softball team wanted to build on the success established by their 2015 District Champion title – and they certainly did.  Last night the team fought hard in their close late-game loss (7-5) to Fort Myers Bishop Verot in the Florida Class 4A State Girls Softball Championship played in Dodgertown, Vero Beach, Florida.

Due to the rain on Wednesday and games delay, MVA had only an hour break in between both games.  The title game was very close and could have gone either way.  To gain a spot in their first-ever Florida High School Athletic Association Class 4A state title game, MVA’s Girls Softball team defeated The Academy of Holy Names by the score of 14-12 in the Florida Class 4A Regional Final Game played at home on Tuesday, April 26th.  Yesterday afternoon, in their first of two games, MVA then defeated recurrent Florida power Miami Westminster Christian by the score of 3-1 in the semifinals.

In a Thursday, May 5, 2016, Daily Commercial article ,  MVA’s impressive overall teamwork at the Florida Class 4A games was detailed: “The Eagles responded with a run in the fifth to tie the game at 5. Emily Martin opened the frame with a single and moved up on a passed ball.  Martin moved to third on a single by Bailey Bates and scored on a wild pitch. However, like the Vikings in the third, the Eagles had an opportunity for at least one more run, but Bates was left on third. Rodriguez led Montverde Academy with two doubles and an RBI. Atkinson also had two hits. Takais had three hits for the Vikings, which finished the season with a 20-8 record. In its semifinal contest, Montverde Academy led from start to finish and knocked off perennial powerhouse Miami Westminster Christian 3-1. Rodriguez scored first for the Eagles in the first inning on sacrifice fly by Atkinson. Montverde Academy added what turned out to be the winning run in the second when Hannah Futo scored on a single by Crumblish. The Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth when Atkinson hammered a two-out triple and scored on a wild pitch. Westminster Christian scored its lone run in the third when Dayma Pia scored on a groundup. Bailey Battles started and got the win and Heather Franson picked up the save.”

This was truly an unforgettable and historical season.  Montverde Academy’s record was a remarkable 21-7. MVA made its first final four appearance following its fifth straight trip to regionals. Montverde lost in the 2013 state semis. This season, the Lady Eagles went 10-0 during the regular season and 2-0 in the District Tournament to get 4x District Champions – and defeated The First Academy in District Championship game. In the Semi-final game, they beat Tampa Catholic 11-1 before their aforementioned Region Championship win over Holy Names.

Big wins this year: South Lake: 12-0, Winter Park 6-2, Berkeley Prep 6-5, East Ridge 6-0, Osceola 7-2.  MVA losses were all to all 8A and 9A teams during regular season.  West Orange and Baker County are both in the State Tournament and Lake Howell made it to Regional Semifinal game.  We lost by one run to Apopka and Astronaut.  According to MVA’s new Girls Varsity Softball Head Coach Kelly Golden, these games were planned on the schedule to face these team towards the end of our season to prepare us for postseason and to see good pitching.

“We had some challenges at the beginning of our season in February with a pitcher leaving the school but the girls faced the challenge and never looked back. Our two other pitchers Bailey Battles and Heather Franson stepped up to the challenge. Our offense carried the team through Regionals and into the State Championship game. I would say beating the Academy of the Holy Names 14-12 in the Regional Championship game was our biggest win and an amazing game! The girls truly believed and never gave up and it made them realize that anything is possible if they play together as a team. Our team motto all year was “One Team, One Heart” and in the playoffs, it showed tremendously. The Coaches could not be more proud of the Lady Eagles Softball Team and all the accomplishments they received. They made history making it to the State Championship game and being the State Tournament Runner Up!  This was truly an unforgettable season and Cinderella story,” said Coach Golden.

Congratulations also goes out to the 2016 Montverde Academy Lady Eagles Varsity Softball team seniors: All 4 of our seniors have been at the Academy for 5 years (8th grade) and all contributed to making this year’s team as strong and talented as they are.
