On Saturday, January 30th, eight members of Montverde Academy’s Mu Alpha Theta chapter (a mathematics honor society) competed in their first Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta (FAMAT) Region 3 Math Competition.  The event was held at Lake Brantley High School, located in Altamonte Springs, Florida.  This was also the Academy’s first time competing in this form of competition – All 8 students participated in both individual and team competition.  Although there were some very challenging questions, Montverde Academy competed very well.

The group was supervised by Ms. Candace Dietrich, Upper School Mathmatics Department Chair, who informed MVA’s Communications Office, “ It gives me great pleasure to announce that our Calculus team placed 4th out of 20 teams, receiving a nice trophy.  The Calculus team included Xintong (Dylan) Deng, Jiawei (David) Wang, Jimmy Wei, Xuchuxue (Irisa) Zhou.  Others that participated were Jude Kinkead, Simin (Kris) Liang, Kejie (Edison) Wei, and Mackenzie Nailos.”

Montverde Academy students will compete in other math contests later this semester – including the 2016 Lake-Sumter State College Mathlympics. Last year, for the ninth time in the last ten years, two MVA teams placed in the top 2 places at LSSC Mathlympics: MVA Team A took First Place with 320 points, and MVA Team B took Second Place with 245 points.
