Congratulations to Montverde Academy senior Shuyang (“Irini”) Ren for being accepted into the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC)!  Accredited since 1936, SAIC is one of America’s leading independent schools for the study of art and design.  According to their official website, “…throughout the history of SAIC, alumni have played central roles in important art movements. It was SAIC that provided the impetus for two significant schools of American painting—the Regionalists of the 1930s, and the Imagists of the 1960s. Some of the most notable names in the arts received their early training at SAIC, including Georgia O’Keeffe, Claes Oldenburg, H.C. Westermann, Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, Ivan Albright, Ed Paschke, Roger Brown, Halston, LeRoy Neiman, Elizabeth Murray, Cynthia Rowley, David Sedaris, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Sarah Vowell.” A Columbia University’s Art Critics National Arts Journalism Survey stated, “SAIC is the most influential art school in the United States.”

Ren was born on July 26, 1997, in Xuyi, Jiangsu Province, China.  She has been interested in art for many years and has been enrolled in the Academy’s SAC /VPA Program since her arrival at MVA as a sophomore.  Throughout her academic career at the Academy, Ren has enrolled in many Advanced Placement (AP) classes: AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics 1, AP Psychology, AP Statistics, AP Studio Art, AP Chinese, and AP Art History.  She has also served as a member of Montverde Academy’s Math Club, Key Club, Recycling Club, Environmental Club, Art Honor Society, Boys and Girls Club, and Chinese Club.  She received an esteemed World Teen and Child Choir’s Award during her junior year summer vacation in Hong Kong, China.  Ren recently informed MVA’s College Guidance Office that she considers herself “…an optimistic person.  No matter what difficulties I meet, I always want to think positively to solve the problem…My academic record is kind of a measurement of my ability.  But there exist more potential for my drawing and painting – and I’m also very interested in architecture and environmental studies.”
