This month, incoming Montverde Academy senior Camille Nieves committed to play women’s collegiate volleyball for the University of Florida Women’s Volleyball team beginning in the fall of 2016.  In an interview with Montverde Academy Communications Office last week, Camille expressed how pleased she was with her decision, telling George K. Karos, MVA Director of Communications, “I’ve been playing volleyball for seven years.  I started when I was 11 years old, and played everywhere – middle, outside, and a little bit of setting. So, I’ve pretty much played all positions and love the game. But I’ve always known I wanted to do defense.  That has always been my passion.  I started playing the libero position when I turned 15, and took that very seriously – taking private lessons, working hard with my coaches to acquire all the necessary skills, including my participation in club volleyball yearly (November-July).  My goal is to keep learning – maybe play professionally one day – but to earn a starting role at UF in the immediate future.”

Before moving to Lake County, Florida, from the Ocoee area of Orange County, Florida, Camille played for Apopka High School, located in Apopka, Florida.  During her volleyball career, Camille has experienced strong emotional support of her friends and family – especially her brother Diego.  Camille’s inspirational relationship with her brother was recounted in an Orlando Sentinel article published last August 24, 2014, entitled “Brother with severe brain damage is in Apopka volleyball standout’s court.”

After making it to their district semi-finals last season, Montverde Academy Lady Eagles Varsity Volleyball team’s record was an outstanding 20-5.   The victorious season included MVA defeating Atlantic High School in the quarterfinals (the first time in school history for a volleyball team to win a district tournament match) and took a set from historically dominant Orlando – area volleyball team Bishop Moore Catholic High School (in the semis-loss) for the first time in Montverde Academy girls volleyball school history.  MVA Varsity Lady Eagles Volleyball play Forest Lake Academy Forest Lake Academy, located in Apopka, Florida, (Away) at 6:00pm TONIGHT!  Go Lady Eagles Volleyball!!!
