The Eagle Spirit Dance Team came home from the National Dance Alliance’s summer camp with a bid to compete in this spring’s national competition.

At the NDA camp, which was held in Fort Lauderdale, Montverde’s team developed their skills in several dance styles and took specialty technique classes such as lifts and partnering, flexibility, turns, leaps and jumps, and hip hop skills.

The team’s Home Routine, choreographed by Head Coach Melissa Urquhart, was taught during the week before summer camp and performed on the first night of the camp. The team received a Superior rating–the highest possible–for their Home Routine as well as a special trophy for Showmanship from the NDA staff.

The Team Routine was taught by the NDA staff and incorporated four different styles of dance: jazz, pom, hip hop, and kick. The Eagles received a Superior rating for this routine as well, and they also brought home the Silver award for earning second place in their division.

The team also brought home the NDA Spirit Stick, which was awarded based on the team’s cooperation, discipline, leadership, and sportsmanship.

NDA nominated four of Montverde’s dancers to serve as All Americans: Aubrey Williams (grade 9), Bayley Johnson (grade 10), Molly Smith (grade 8), and Andrea Alvarez (grade 11). These nominees auditioned during the camp, with Bayley Johnson and Andrea Alvarez both making NDA’s All American Team. As All Americans, Bayley and Andrea are invited to participate in NDA events throughout the year, including a New Year’s Day parade performance in London.

In individual evaluations, each of Montverde’s dancers received Superior ribbons for each of the dances they learned. In addition, Hannah Schmid received a Merit ribbon for Spirit from the NDA staff; Aubrey Williams and Bayley Johnson received Merit ribbons for Technique; and Molly Smith received Merit ribbons for both Technique and Showmanship. Aubrey Williams also received special recognition during the camp after being chosen by another school’s team as an inspiration.

With Superior ratings for Home Routine, Team Routine, and their individual evaluations, the team received a bid to the NDA National Championship, which will be held February 26-28 at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando.
