Along with our focus on academic success, Montverde Academy offers boarding and day students the opportunity to participate in year-round competitive athletic teams, or in after-school activities (strength conditioning, general fitness, fine arts/drama and choir) with the option of participation in competitive athletic programming – which requires an advanced level of capability, and more of a time-based commitment from student-athletes. Many MVA athletic teams have succeeded both locally – and nationally. Last school year, MVA’s Girls’ Varsity soccer team was 19-0-1 and ranked the #1 girls high-school soccer team in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. MVA Boys’ Varsity Soccer Eagles (23-0-0 this season) finished their season ranked #1 in the United States by Top Drawer Soccer.com, and the 2014-2015 Montverde Academy Boys’ Varsity Basketball team (31-1) was the first high-school basketball team in the USA to win three consecutive national titles since the decade of the 1940s. The desire to achieve a high level of distinction and success similar to that of longer standing MVA sports programs is blossoming within the Academy’s Varsity Swim Team – a program that didn’t exist five years ago. Under the direction of 2nd– year coach Arilson Champam De Almeida, the talent-level of swimmers is developing very fast. At the 2014 FHSAA State Championships last season, the team’s overall success showed the state of Florida that MVA serious about building a strong and effective swimming program.
This summer has been an especially beneficial one for Montverde Academy Swimming program. Two separate camps allowed campers to train in our newly completed innovative 40,000 square foot MVA Aquatic Center. July 5th – 18th, MVA welcomed twenty campers to an Eagles Swim Training Camp. This camp allowed campers “to grow and improve with every stroke.” To see a video overview of the camp, please visit HERE. From July 19th – 28th, thirty-four campers attended the Montverde Academy’s Swimming Clinic that was directed by Coach Champam De Almeida. The two week camp focused on improving speed and technique, strength, endurance, and increased fitness level of campers. Two campers were presented with Montverde Academy Swimming Clinic Awards of Excellence: Yonathan Cohen (12 years old) of Brazil, won the boys award. Ana Sofia Campos (13 years old) of Brazil, won the girls award. On Tuesday, August 11th, 2015, Coach Champam De Almeida told Montverde.org, “The level of swimming talent at the clinic was inspiring, and an indication of how the program will be successful for years to come.”
MVA swimmers on the 2015 Summer NTC Lightning Aquatics team competed very well at the 2015 Florida Swimming Senior Championships held the weekend of July 16th, 2015, in Ft. Pierce, Florida. They placed 7th overall in combined points (men and women) out of 50 teams. Montverde Academy sophomore Lauren Buddendorff competed in the 200 meter breaststroke event with a lifetime best which placed her 8th overall. Similarly, in Sarasota, Florida, on July 16th, 2015, another Montverde Academy rising sophomore, Mayrangela Rodriguez, qualified for the 2015 National Club Swimming Association Junior Nationals after her excellent participation in the 100 meters of the FLAGS Swim Meet. She then travelled to Indiana to compete in her first interstate event July 31-August 2nd – a very respectful showing at the 2015 Futures Championships in West Lafayette.
