Alexander LaPlante, a MVA Music Conservatory senior, was recently chosen to sing in a national mixed high-school chorus performing at the National Association for Music Education teacher’s conference, being held in Nashville, Tennessee, October 25th-28th, 2015.  The process of selection to the chorus has been lengthy, but enriching for Alexander, the son of Mrs. Kathy Weibe-LaPlante, MVA Theatre’s Technical Director.  “Alex” had to pass three days of music theory, sight singing, as well as a vocal quality tests/vocal quality exam, and learn 8 pieces of music in 4 different languages over two weekends in October of  2014 to be eligible for state.  He was accepted to Florida’s All-State in Tampa last January.  Once he qualified for state, he was permitted to audition for nationals.

This spring, Alex had to submit a video of himself singing two solos for review.  Upon acceptance to the chorus, Alex was one of only a few boys from across the nation who were chosen to sing second tenor in the national choir.  Alex is the first student from Montverde Academy to ever make the All-National mixed chorus!  Alexander was competing against thousands of other high school singers nationwide for one of only one hundred spots.  The national choir is singing this October 2015 in Nashville at the the Grand Ole Opry House!  Also impressive, is that Alex is one of only 35 kids from the state of Florida that made it into the national chorus this year.

Alex has had an extremely busy summer as well.  In June, he attended the University of Central Florida for 10 days to participate and study in an opera vocal and movement camp.  After that wonderful experience, he spent a week at the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center participating in drama classes called Take It From The Top – which is a Broadway-intensive working with professionals from Broadway.  Like he did last summer, Alex then headed to Tampa, Florida, to attend the Broadway Theatre Project, acclaimed dancer/actor Ben Vereen’s camp, held on the campus of University of South Florida.  Later this summer, Alex began working at the Norwegian Cruise lines rehearsal facility.  He recently went on a 7 day cruise to perform on the Getaway Cruise for Norwegian!

Next up (before the beginning of MVA’s fall semester):  Alex is heading up to New York City for a college audition prep – workshop for three days.  During this time, Alex is planning on visiting “…nine schools from NY to New Jersey – and between Boston to Pennsylvania!”  Between his time up north, Alexander is also learning how to “walk a tight rope” at a circus school for the MVA’s spring show version of “Barnum the Musical.”

Throughout his student acting career at MVA, Alex has performed many diverse and challenging theatrical roles and characters which include:

  • Shrek the Musical – as Farquaad
  • West Side Story – as Riff
  • Thoroughly Modern Millie – as Jimmy Smith
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – as was Edmund
  • Little Shop of Horrors – as Seymour
  • Guys and Dolls – as Sky Masterson
  • A Christmas Carol – as Scrooge
  • Beauty and the Beast – as Lumiere
