Yesterday, Tuesday, June 30, 2015, MVA rising senior Howard Washington verbally committed to play NCAA D1 basketball in the 2016-2017 season for the Butler University Bulldogs! Butler, a private university located in Indianapolis, Indiana, competes in the Big East Conference. Washington transferred to Montverde Academy as a junior last summer and played 28 games for Montverde, averaging 6.6 points, 2.7 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals. He was an integral member of the Montverde Academy Boys’ Varsity Basketball team (31-1) that defeated USA TODAY #1 ranked (and previously undefeated) Oak Hill Academy, of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia (47-1), 70-61, on Saturday, April 4, 2015, to win the Championship game of the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Boys’ National Tournament.
Washington is thankful and gracious to now be attending Montverde Academy. Still focused as a loyal Eagle Boys’ Varsity team member for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year, Washington is reported to have worn a “Montverde warm-up jacket” for his recent college announcement. In an article published by Buffalonews.com entitled,“ Howard Washington; From Buffalo to Butler, via Florida, Washington states that his time as a MVA Boys’ Varsity Basketball player has been quite beneficial in that it has “… kind of changed my game. My mom even said — my game changed: a lot more aggressive…A lot more aggressive, a lot more intense and physical…like I should be playing where I’m going to be going — the Big East, high Division I, major schools.”
Prior to Washington’s commitment yesterday, and according to the aforementioned article, Washington was “…offered him scholarships (the first five of which came prior to playing his sophomore season): Virginia Tech, Virginia, Boston College, Boston University, Canisius, the University at Buffalo, Butler, Xavier, Dayton, Texas Tech, George Washington, Wake Forest, Central Florida, Miami (Fla.), Rice, DePaul, Rhode Island, Georgia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth and Penn State.”
