Three Montverde Academy graduates, from years 2012-2014, are prospects in the 2015 NBA Draft. The MVA alumni, who are joined by a talented 2015 NBA Draft Official List of Early Entrants, are Michael Frazier – MVA Class of 2012 ( The University of Florida), Dakari Johnson – MVA Class of 2013 (The University of Kentucky), and D’Angelo Russell – MVA Class of 2014 (Ohio State University). Montverde.org has been researching past NBA Drafts to determine if any other high-school (in the last 20 years) has had more of its graduates enter (and selected) in any one single draft. It seems as though that hasn’t happened recently, especially since the NBA has only two rounds (years ago, the draft consisted of more rounds with many more selections). After reaching out to several reputable high-school basketball journalists about this topic, Montverde.org received some noteworthy information to share. Mr. Jim Halley, of USA TODAY, emailed Mr. George K. Karos, MVA’s Director of Communications, that Oak Hill Academy, of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, had three players taken in the NBA draft, including two in the first round, and one in the second round of the 1995 NBA Draft. As Eagles sports fans know, the 2014-2015 Montverde Academy Boys’ Varsity Basketball team defeated nationally top ranked, and previously undefeated, Oak Hill Academy (47-1), located in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, 70-61 on Saturday, April 4, 2015, to win the Championship of the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Boys’ National Tournament. Mr. Adam Fischer, of the Naples Daily News, confirmed that the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, located in Baltimore, Maryland, had four of their former players selected in the 1987 NBA Draft, including three in that draft’s first round: Reggie Williams, “Muggsy” Bogues and Reggie Lewis.
The 2015 NBA Draft Combine took place in Chicago, Illinois, on May 12th-17th and provided the opportunity for participants to take part in player physical measurements, interviews, shooting drills, medical tests, five-on-five drills and athletic tests in front of NBA scouts, coaches, and general managers. Prospects attended by invitation only. All three MVA Boys Varsity Basketball alumni attended the combine and performed very well. 2014 MVA graduate D’Angelo Russell, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, played basketball for Ohio State University as a freshman this past season. Russell, a Montverde Academy boarding student for nearly three school years, averaged nearly 20 points a game in the 2014-2015 NCAA basketball season, was awarded the Big 10 Freshman Player of the Year, and also named to the 1st team All-Big-Ten too. Russell, who missed a large portion of his MVA senior year season due to knee surgery, was awarded the 2014 Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament (M.A.I.T.) Most Valuable Player, was selected as a McDonalds All-American, and was a major factor in MVA’s 2013-2014 undefeated season record (24-0) that included winning the 2014 DICK’S Sporting Goods High School National Tournament. Russell is thought to be selected early – perhaps #3 in the 2015 NBA 1st Round by the Philadelphia 76ers team. To read more on that possibility, please read the Thursday, May 28th, 2015, Philly VOICE article, “ NBA Draft Scenarious: What Happens if D’Angelo Russell goes in top two? HERE.
2013 MVA graduate Dakari Johnson, a native of the Bronx, New York, a sophomore center this past season for the University of Kentucky, has been projected to be selected in the #30-#50 selections of the draft’s 2nd Round. In his senior year at MVA, Dakari was an impressive leader in MVA’s thrilling 67-66 nationally televised victory over St. Benedict’s Prep of Newark, New Jersey, in the ESPN 2013 National Invitational Tournament Championship. He was named that tournament’s Most Valuable Player of that game, selected as a McDonald’s All-American, and played an important role in helping the MVA Eagles solidify their 25-2 record and #1 consensus ranking in all leading 2013 national high-school basketball polls. Could Dakari Johnson possibly end-up with Philadelphia’s team too? 2015 NBA Draft assessments indicate this is a real possibility with Philly having late 2015 NBA Draft 2nd Round selections. As mentioned, Philadelphia has a strong interest in Johnson’s former MVA teammate Russell. Joel Embiid, a former MVA Eagles teammate of Russell’s on the 2011-2012 MVA Boys Varsity Basketball team, as well as 2005 MVA graduate Luc Mbah a Moute, are both playing on the current Philadelphia squad.
Through excellent performances in the shooting drills at the recent 2015 NBA Draft Combine, 2012 MVA graduate Michael Frazier II , a native of Tampa, Florida, has increased his stock as a prospective NBA shooting guard. Specifically, the Miami Heat has showed an interest in Frazier as a late 2015 NBA Draft 2nd Round selection (ESPN analyst says Frazier, Walker could go in second round). Read more about that possibility HERE. Frazier, a junior last season, was a two-year starter at the University of Florida and, in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference (SEC), was a top-quality 3-point shooter. This season, Frazier played only 26 games this season due to injuries. He averaged 12.1 points a game, and made 57 of 150 shots (38 percent) from 3-point land. He also shot 87 percent from the free-throw line. On June 25th, 2015, the 2015 NBA Draft will be held in New York City, at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
