Montverde Academy senior Amanda Elizabeth Huang, of Hunan,China, received an athletic scholarship from the University of Alabama for gymnastics. Last month (Sunday, April 19, 2015), Amanda competed outstandingly at the Junior Olympic Regionals.  She finished 3rd Place All Around and 2nd place on the Uneven Bars.  In doing so, she qualified for JO Nationals – only the top 7 gymnasts qualify (out of 44 in her age group).  Amanda then performed impressively at the Junior Olympic Nationals held in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday, May 14th through Saturday, May 16th.

Mrs. Laura Huang, Amanda’s mother, informed, “Amanda did really well in her competition this past Saturday!  She finished in 3rd Place on the Uneven Bars and 8th place in the all-around. There were 56 girls in the competition… We are very proud of her! During her career she has qualified and competed at 4 National events as a Level 10 Gymnast and one US Nationals as an Elite Level gymnast. This is quite an accomplishment in gymnastics.”

According to her biography, provided to MVA by her parents, “Amanda had a lot of energy and always wanted to learn or do something fun, so her mom took her to Tumble Cubs. She started her competitive gymnastics career at North Wind Gymnastics in Alpharetta, Georgia, where she trained under coach Elena Piskun, an Olympian from Belarus. Amanda began competing as a Level 4 gymnast in 2003. She had many successes as a Level 4 and Level 5 gymnast, then skipped Level 6 to go to Level 7, where she was 3rd place all-around at State. Amanda was the Level 9 State Bars champion in 2008 and 2009. She was the Level 10 State Bars and All-Around Champion in 2010. In 2011 she was the Level 10 State, Regional and National Bars Champion. She qualified as a Junior International Elite gymnast in 2011 and competed at the U.S. Covergirl Classic in Chicago. She attended numerous training camps at the U.S. National Team Training Center in Houston, Texas under the watchful eye of USA National Team Coordinator, Martha Karolyi.”

In 2013, Amanda moved to Brandy Johnson’s Gymnastics, located in nearby Clermont, Florida, and began attending school at Montverde Academy last year. In May of 2014, she competed at J.O. Nationals in Jackson, Mississippi, where she placed 2nd on Bars.  Amanda was a sophomore when she verbally committed to the University of Alabama for 2015.
