As the school year enters its last few weeks, Montverde Academy/Bishops Gate Golf Academy students are preparing their hectic summer schedules. Recently, many of our students played in qualifiers of the Junior World Championships and the U.S. Open, and several junior golf tournaments throughout Florida.
According to the most recent BGGA “Weekend-Wrap Up,” Marcos Montenegro, a BGGA and MVA junior, “…fired an impressive 69 to enter a four-way playoff to earn a spot in the regional qualifier for the U.S. Open. Marcos fought through the playoff and sealed his position in the U.S. Open Regional Qualifier in early June.” Playing in one of the larger international junior golf tournaments, Karen Miyamoto, a BGGA and MVA junior, “…ran away with a wire-to-wire eight-shot victory. Karen shot 6-under-par 70-68-138 at Rio Pinar Golf Club to secure a spot in the IMG Junior World Championship in July.”
Playing in the Scott Robertson Memorial Golf Tournament, Maria Hoyos, a BGGA and MVA sophomore, “…started the weekend strong with a 5-under-par 66 and finished with a tournament total 66-72-71-209, claiming a solo-third finish. Also playing the Scott Robertson Memorial was University of Georgia commit Gaby Coello, a BGGA senior. Gaby shot a tournament total 223 to claim a tie for 19th.”
Antonia Frisia, a BGGA and MVA senior, recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Colorado State University women’s golf team. “Antonia is the fifth BGGA senior to sign an NLI at a Division I school. BGGA students will also play collegiate golf for the University of New Mexico, Texas Tech University, Auburn University, and Oklahoma University.”
