At an April meeting, Montverde Academy’s K-Kids, a Lower-school community service club affiliated with Kiwanis International, were visited by Thomas Battisto (and Sydney), representatives of the Lake County, Florida, non-profit organization Read to Sydney. Sydney is a registered therapy dog that helps children gain confidence in reading. Mr. Battisto adopted Sydney,an Australian Sheppard and Chow mix, from a no-kill shelter about five years ago and trained her to become a therapy dog. Mr. Batissto has written multiple books about Sydney and her adventures.
It’s been a busy spring for MVA K-Kids. On Friday March 13th, 2015, they held their 2015 fund-raising dinner at the Clermont City Center, located in downtown Clermont, Florida. The social event was organized to raise money for New Beginnings of Central Florida. Forty Lower-school students sold nearly one-hundred and seventy tickets for the occasion – a “Hawaiian Luau” themed event that raised $2,300 for New Beginnings. In February, Montverde Academy’s K-Kids won the First Place award in the Silver Category of the 2013-2014 Florida K-Kids Children and Youth Service annual honors.
