Mrs. Pat Hines, Montverde Academy Lower-school Media Specialist, has informed Montverde.org that Tuesday morning, April 21st, 2015, during Lower-school morning Assembly, MVA fifth graders were recognized who participated in the annual Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award Program (SSYRA). SSYRA is a reading challenge program sponsored annually by FAME (Florida Association for Media in Education). According to their website, SSYRA “…coordinates, and monitors the selection of the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards by the school children of Florida. In addition, the committee plans an event at the annual conference for the presentation of the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards; and develops a master list of titles from which the book awards will be chosen.”
Montverde Academy Lower-school students were honored because they had read at least 7 of the 15 books on the SSYRA reading list. In meeting that requirement, Mrs. Hines hosted a congratulatory ice cream sundae party for those students! Nine of the students read ALL 15 titles! Those nine students also received trophies for their accomplishment.
The SSYRA reading challenge begins at the start of the school year and concludes in early April. At that time any student who has read three of the titles may vote for their favorite book. The votes are tabulated and sent to FAME, and the state winner is announced every May. This year, the winning book at MVA LS was “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’ s Library” by Chris Grabenstein.
