On Friday, April 17th, 2015, Montverde Academy Lower-school First Grade students travelled to Orlando, Florida, on a scheduled school field trip to attend a performance held at the Margeson Theater of the Orlando Shakespeare Theater! MVA 1st graders enjoyed OST’s theatrical rendition of “James and the Giant Peach“, by David Wood, and based on the book written by Roald Dahl. MVA First Grade teachers, Ms. Carmen Synovec and Ms. Sandy Tamasi (both of whom were chaperones for the field trip) had spent several weeks this spring reading aloud the classic novel to their students.
According to OST’s website, the play is centered on a “…young orphan James flees from his two conniving aunts, and launches on a journey of enormous proportions! Suddenly he finds himself in the center of a gigantic peach surrounded by human-sized insects with equally over-sized personalities. Follow James, the wise Old-Green-Grasshopper, and the pessimistic Earthworm on their wild adventure!”
In an email to Montverde.org, Ms. Carmen Synovec stated, “The students were anxious to see if the play would follow the same story line and were gratified to learned that it did (for the most part!!). The students were thrilled to see the story come to life on stage…some students were even participants before and during the production: dancing like they had ‘ants in their pants and bees on their knees’ and purchasing tickets to see the giant peach from the infamous characters of Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, and actually knocking on the door of the giant peach stone to get the story started.”
