Today, Thursday, April 9th from 8am – 10:30am (periods 1-3) Montverde Academy sophomores reported to the Fine Arts Building for the Academy’s annual “Sophomore Experience Mini-College Fair.” The college preparation event allowed sophomores to begin learning about the process and general inquiries associated with preparing their student transcripts and college applications, how to best acquaint themselves with a campus, a prospective school’s mission, financial aid, and class scheduling of potential public and private universities/colleges. Attendance was taken promptly at 8:00 AM inside Sandra O. Stephens Fine Arts Auditorium. Seven college/university representatives travelled to MVA to present information at the event: Florida Southern College, Berry College, Johnson and Wales University, University of Central Florida, Jacksonville University, Lake Sumter State College, and Rollins College. Each representative spoke approximately 5~7 minutes about their school, and briefly about topics that included:

1. Where does a 10th grader begin in a college/university search?

2. Admissions Process: how important is GPA, AP classes, test scores

3. Why visiting campus is important

4. scholarships and financial aid: FAFSA

5. International students: specific things they should know (TOEFL required?)

6. Athletics and extra-curricular activities: are they really important?

7. Choosing a major

In related news, Ms. Felecia Williams, Montverde Academy Director of College Guidance, shared an update from the MVA College Guidance Office in Montverde Academy’s March Newsletter, where she reminded MVA seniors that they have until May 1, 2015, to select the school of their choice for next year. She also recommended that seniors are also encouraged to stop by the MVA office for assistance regarding any final questions they might have with respect to the college application process. The office has also devised a sample letter to notify colleges when a student will not be attending a college/university that accepted them. This act of courtesy is considered good form and often extended to an institution to assist them with their waiting lists and acceptance availability. A checklist for students who have selected the college or university of their choice has also been created and available in the college guidance office. College/university application process checklists for freshmen, sophomores and juniors are also available. Students interested in summer college program opportunities, or to search for academic, community service, and volunteer opportunities are also welcomed to visit the MVA College Guidance office for assistance. International students are encouraged to begin preparing their I-20 paperwork – as soon as schools are selected for next year, it is imperative to have their necessary paperwork for I-20’s transferred as soon as possible. Please see MVA College Guidance Office for a copy of the letter that outlines the process or stop in the admissions office. Florida residents graduating this year should have applied for the Bright Futures scholarship. Other scholarships are also available so please see Mrs. Prescott for information on scholarships available for our students.

In the aforementioned newsletter, Ms. Williams stated, “Class of 2016! Ready, set go! You are navigating the road toward college admissions and should be preparing for the upcoming ACT on April 18th and the SAT on May 2nd. Please get a good night’s sleep on the eve of the test and as usual, a continental breakfast will be served. We will be boarding the bus to go over to East Ridge High School for the ACT, and in May, you all will be taking the SAT here on our campus. By now you should have logged onto Naviance, our College Planning Tool, where you should have taken the personality test and reviewed the career inventory. You should also be researching colleges and exploring careers and majors that match your personality. Don’t forget… all juniors are required to list on Naviance by June 1st at least six colleges of interest … We are now ready to schedule individual college meetings with all juniors. Please call or email us to set up this very important meeting where we will discuss with you everything that you need to know about the college process…All students taking AP courses should be prepared to attend the pre-information session which will be scheduled at least two weeks prior to the AP Exams. AP Exams officially begin on Monday, May 4, 2015 and end on Friday, May 15, 2015. All AP teachers should have the AP Exam schedule by now, however if students should need information about where and when testing will occur, please visit the College Guidance office.” Class of 2015 is continuing to receive college acceptances daily.
