Congratulations to the 2014-2015 Montverde Academy Boys’ Varsity Basketball team (31-1) for defeating USA TODAY#1 ranked (and previously undefeated) Oak Hill Academy, of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia (47-1), 70-61, on Saturday, April 4, 2015, to win the Championship game of the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Boys’ National Tournament! This was MVA’s 2nd time in a row winning the annual tournament at New York’s Madison Square Garden, televised LIVE on ESPN, and the victory also gave Montverde Academy their 3rd consecutive national high-school basketball title!  Also impressive is that MVA is the first high-school basketball team to win three national titles in a row since the decade of the 1940s. The MVA Eagles also improved their record to 107-7 over the last four seasons under MVA Head-Coach Kevin Boyle.

According to a Saturday, April 4th, 2015, newspaper article from Daily Commercial writer Frank Jolley, who travelled to NYC on assignment to cover MVA, “At halftime of Saturday’s national championship game in the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School Nationals, Montverde Academy trailed by seven and walked slowly off the floor. In the locker room, Eagles coach Kevin Boyle challenged his players to finish the game like champions. And they did.” MVA senior Ben Simmons, a LSU basketball signee, and the tournament’s MVP missed a great deal of the first half due to suffering a violent loose-ball blow to his right eye, and “…recorded his third straight double-double (with 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists) and Fard Muhammad drained a trio of 3 pointers (and finished with 20 points) in the second half to lead the Eagles to a win…” MVA senior center/forward Noah Dickerson, a University of Florida Men’s Basketball team signee, showed excellent leadership in shooting 4-5 crucial shot from the foul-line. The Eagles, currently ranked #2 in the United States by USA TODAY, advanced to the championship by defeating #6 ranked Findlay Prep, of Henderson, Nevada, in the semifinals on Friday, April 3, 2015, who defeated Blanche Ely (Pompano Beach, Fla.) in their quarterfinal game. In an debatably shoddy, low-scoring, and somewhat carelessly played game by both teams, MVA senior guard Martez Cameron, one of the smallest players on the court, was able to position himself under the rim to grab an unchallenged offensive rebound and score a layup at the buzzer of regulation that sent the game into overtime. With strong play from Simmons, who finished with 24 points (14 of 19 from the foul line) MVA was then able to secure the OT win 57-53. In game one of the tournament, played Thursday, April 2, 2015,  Montverde Academy easily defeated Greensboro Day, of Greensboro, North Carolina,  50-34 in the quarterfinals of the 2015 DICK’s tournament held at Christ the King High School, located in Middle River, New York. MVA’s quarterfinals victory, MVA senior Ben Simmons, a scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds, and recorded his 25th career double-double.

This was Montverde Academy’s fifth participation in the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Nationals. MVA was a runner-up in both 2010 and 2012, and champions of the national title in 2013 and 2014. In This season, Simmons has averaged 28.0 points, 4.0 assists, 11.9 rebounds, 2.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game for the Eagles. Over the last two months of 2015, Simmons has earned numerous national high school player of the year awards. Simmons played 4 games in a row (last Wednesday-Saturday) after travelling from Chicago, Illinois, Wednesday night and playing in the 38th Annual 2015 McDonald’s All American Game, to New York, New York, to join Montverde Academy teammates at the DICK’s Sporting Goods High School Boys’ Nationals Championship.  Last year, on April 5, 2014, Montverde Academy’s 2013-2014 Boys’ Varsity Boys’ Basketball team won its 2nd consecutive national high school basketball title after defeating Oak Hill Academy 71-62, in the championship game of  the 2014 DICK’S tournament.
