Montverde Academy, a two-time defending DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Boys’ National Tournament champion, defeated Greensboro Day, of Greensboro, North Carolina, 50-34 yesterday (Thursday, April 2, 2015) in the quarterfinals of the 2015 DICK’s tournament held at Christ the King High School, located in Middle River, New York. MVA, 29-1 and ranked #2 high-school basketball team in the United States by USA TODAY, advanced to today’s 3 P.M. semifinals game against #6 Findlay Prep, of Henderson, Nevada, who defeated Blanche Ely (Pompano Beach, Fla.) in their quarterfinal game yesterday. The winner from the MVA/Findlay game will play in tomorrow’s (Saturday, April 4th, 2015) 12:00 PM Dick’s Nationals Championship Game being held at Madison Square Garden and televised on ESPN.
It’s Montverde Academy’s fifth overall attendance in the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School Nationals. MVA was a runner-up in both 2010 and 2012, and champions of the national title in 2013 and 2014. In MVA’s quarterfinals victory yesterday, MVA senior Ben Simmons, a LSU basketball signee, had 15 points with 11 rebounds, and recorded his 25th career double-double. This season, Simmons has averaged 28.0 points, 4.0 assists, 11.9 rebounds, 2.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game for the Eagles. Over the last two months of 2015, Simmons has earned numerous national high school player of the year awards. Simmons played 2 games in 24 hours – having travelled from Chicago, Illinois, after playing in the 38th Annual 2015 McDonald’s All American Game, Wednesday night, to New York, New York, to join Montverde Academy teammates for yesterday’s game. MVA is attempting to win their third consecutive national championship, and second straight DICK’s Sporting Goods High School Boys’ Nationals Championship. University of Florida Men’s Basketball team -bound MVA senior center/forward Noah Dickerson played impressively well both offensively and defensively for the Eagles, and finished with a game-high of 20 points. On April 5, 2014, Montverde Academy’s 2013-2014 Boys’ Varsity Boys’ Basketball team won its 2nd consecutive national high school basketball title after overpowering Oak Hill Academy, located in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, 71-62, in the championship game of the 2014 DICK’S tournament. The Eagles, who completed their 2013-2014 season undefeated at 28-0, won that tournament after winning three successive games played April 3rd-5th of 2014. MVA’s Ben Simmons, then a junior, was selected the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and senior Justin Bibbs, now a freshman on the Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball team, was selected to the all-tournament team.
