Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy:
The grading period just concluded and you will soon be receiving report cards. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the results of your child’s performance in the 3rd grading period, I would encourage you to consult with the appropriate division head for guidance. If necessary or desired, the division head may schedule a parent-teacher conference to better respond to any concerns you may have.
Construction on the new upper school building continues to progress very well and thus far the weather has cooperated nicely allowing us to remain on the desired construction schedule. The steel has been set for the second floor and shortly the concrete flooring for the second floor will be poured and the remaining block will be erected in preparation for the roof trusses to be set. We remain on schedule to obtain occupancy of the building in the early part of August several weeks before the start of the school year.
As you have recently read in various news releases, the Academy has partnered with South Lake Hospital, The University of Central Florida and Lake Sumter State College to form the Health Sciences Collegiate Academy. This program will be offered to rising 9th graders at Montverde Academy who may be interested in a health sciences related field of study. Upon graduation from Montverde Academy in their senior year, students will also be eligible for an AA degree from Lake Sumter State College and pending successful performance a guaranteed gateway into UCF to continue their studies toward a bachelor’s degree.
Simultaneously, Montverde Academy will also be enrolling its first class of junior college graduates as we continue on our quest to earn our Level 1 college accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This unique opportunity has not been accomplished in a secondary school in the SACS region and Montverde Academy aims to be the first to earn the distinction. In doing so, we will be offering our first AA degree program in General Studies; the course of study will be a precursor toward the bachelor degree allowing students to move straight into their major course of study upon graduation from Montverde Academy. In the future, I will be working to establish additional partnerships with colleges and universities in and outside the State of Florida that will work with us to guarantee admission to the college or university upon meeting certain fundamental academic requirements upon graduation from The Collegiate Academy at Montverde.
April 2-4, 2015, the Montverde Academy Eagles boys’ basketball team will represent our school once again in the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament. Ranked #2 in most national polls, the Montverde Academy Eagles will vie for a 3rd consecutive national title and an opportunity to defeat #2 Oak Hill Academy. Led by seniors Ben Simmons (LSU), Marquez Letcher-Ellis (Rice), Doral Moore (Wake Forest), Jean Marc Koumadje (FSU), and Noah Dickerson (UF), the Eagles are busy preparing for a tough tournament field of highly regarded teams. In the event that you find yourself in the New York area, the first two rounds of games will be held at Christ the King High School and the final day contests on April 4th will be held at Madison Square Garden. The host hotel is the Westin Grand Central.
Hearty congratulations to our fine arts department on a wonderful performance of Beauty and the Beast. The size and scope of this production was an enormous task and Director Adrian Ahern and Technical Director Kathy Wiebe did a wonderful job guiding this production with support of a host of parents and other staff members; it was a very enjoyable production for the entire school community. In the coming weeks, the fine arts department will be offering various opportunities to attend year-end concerts in the musical and choral departments, and we urge you to attend!
As we prepare for the spring vacation, I wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday!
