Yesterday (Thursday, March 12, 2015), Montverde Academy senior Ben Simmons, an 18 year-old native of Melbourne, Australia, committed to play basketball for the Louisiana State University (LSU) after his graduation from the Academy, was awarded the prestigious 2015 Naismith Trophy Boy’s High School Player of the Year, presented by Hilton Worldwide. It’s been a great senior year for Montverde Academy’s Ben Simmons, a 6’9 senior center/strong forward for Montverde Academy the last three seasons. Simmons has averaged 28.0 points, 4.0 assists, 11.9 rebounds, 2.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game for our Montverde Academy Eagles (28-1). For two years, he was a boarding student at MVA, and he is now a day-student living with his family (who moved from Australia) in nearby Windermere, Florida. He is ranked the #1 overall ESPN 100 high-school basketball player in the nation. The 2015 Eagles Boys’ Varsity Basketball team is ranked #1 in the recent MaxPreps FREEMAN Rankings.
In a Thursday, March 12, 2015, USA TODAY article, “Ben Simmons Wins Naismith Trophy Boys Player of the Year Award,” Jim Halley wrote: “Ben Simmons, a senior power forward who has helped Montverde Academy to a 56-1 record in the past two seasons, was named Thursday as the Naismith Trophy Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Simmons, who has signed with Louisiana State, is averaging 29 points, 12 rebounds and 4.4 assists a game this season. He was named the Morgan Wooten Player of the Year earlier this week. His team, ranked No. 2 in the Super 25, plays in the DICKS’ High School Nationals basketball tournament next month…He has also played for Australia’s FIBA Oceania championship squad.”
Ben was also selected to take part in the 2015 Jordan Brand Classic All-Star Game Classic being played Friday, April 17th, 2015, at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York. The game will be televised LIVE on ESPN2 and be played at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. On Tuesday, March 10th, 2015, Ben won the McDonald’s All American Games Wooten Award for best national high-school boys player. The honor was awarded to Ben from former DeMatha High School (Hyattsville, Maryland), and High-School Hall-of-Fame Basketball Head Coach Morgan Wootten (2015 MAAG Selection Committee Chairman) The official award presentation will take place at the McDonald’s All American Games awards banquet in Chicago, Illinois, on March 31st, 2015. At the beginning of Montverde Academy’s Upper-School Assembly, held on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, Simmons was honored for being selected as finalist in the highly esteemed annual high-school basketball classic.
