Many former Eagle Boys’ Varsity Basketball players are “flying high,” and contributing to the success of their respective colleges/university basketball programs this season. Perhaps the most visible former Eagle doing so in the current national NCAA spotlight is 2014 MVA alumni D’Angelo Russell. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, D’Angelo is currently a freshman playing basketball for Ohio State University. Russell, who was a Montverde Academy boarding student for three school years, is being mentioned in many countrywide conversations regarding the 2015 NBA Draft prospects. This week, D’Angelo was awarded the Big 10 Freshman Player of the Year, and also named to 1st team All-Big-Ten too.
As a senior last year at MVA, Russell was ranked #18 in the “Top 150 Recruits for Class of 2014” by Rivals.com, awarded the 2014 Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament (M.A.I.T.) Most Valuable Player, and led MVA in winning the 2014 DICK’S Sporting Goods High School National Tournament played in New York, New York [tournament win article on Montverde.org]. D’Angelo’s meteoric rise to becoming a dominant NCAA college basketball player, as well as his educational journey and life-changing transition experience from a 15 year-old teenager living in Kentucky, to Montverde Academy, and inevitably to Ohio State, is detailed in the following new Sports Illustrated video: Rising Stars: D’Angelo Russell, Ohio State.
